Hervanta Swimming Hall has been excavated into the bedrock 30 metres below ground level, and it was completed in 1978. The swimming hall has a six-lane 25-metre pool, a children's pool and a gym. The cave is about three kilometres long. In addition to the swimming hall, a parking garage for a couple of hundred cars was built in the cave. Later, another cave was built for an ice hockey practice rink. All the cave facilities also serve as the area's civil defence shelters in case of a crisis.
