Märket Lighthouse

The Märket Lighthouse stands on a small skerry in the Sea of Åland, about 20 kilometres northwest of the main island of Åland. The border between Finland and Sweden runs across the island. The skerry is low-lying, which made building the lighthouse necessary because of the numerous groundings. The lighthouse was built in 1885 and its tower is 15 metres high. Märket was the longest-manned of Åland's lighthouses, and it was not automated until 1976. The Finnish Lighthouse Society has leased Märket since 2007 and is restoring it. The society keeps volunteer lighthouse keepers on the island, who guide visitors. The Signilskär–Märket nature reserve extends as far as the lighthouse island, and the water area belongs to the Natura 2000 and Ramsar areas. Seals thrive on the rocks of Märket.
