Bengtskär Lighthouse

Bengtskär Lighthouse is Finland's southernmost inhabited island and the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries (52 m), located about 25 km southwest of Hanko. The lighthouse was built in 1906 according to the plans of architect Florentin Granholm, using the island's own granite. The lighthouse was completed in only nine months, a true feat of engineering skill for its time. Originally the lighthouse was manned by a lighthouse keeper, three guards and a foghorn keeper together with their families, 15 people in total. In the 1930s, at most 32 people lived on the island. The lighthouse suffered from bombardments during both the First and Second World Wars, and especially the battles of 1941 left marks still visible on the lighthouse's stone walls. Visiting and services: In summer the lighthouse is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Day visitors are offered guided tours, a café and a postmark for stamping your own postcard. Along marked routes you can explore the lighthouse's museum rooms, chapel, bunkers and living quarters. Overnight stay: The lighthouse has seven guest rooms and 25 beds in total. Overnight guests have access, in hourly turns, to a granite sauna that is over 100 years old. Experience: 252 steps and two ladders lead up to a viewing platform, from which opens an unobstructed panorama over the open waters of the Archipelago Sea.
