Toimela was originally a family villa built on a rented plot of the Irjala farm in Messukylä, which the YWCA (NNKY) bought in 1917. The Evangelical Association bought the plot's buildings for the department's use in 1934. The current sauna at Toimela was built through volunteer work in the early 1960s. Bible, singing and sauna evenings are held at Toimela, at the end of which the sauna is heated.
