Hanko Bird Observatory, or Halias, is a research station maintained by the Helsinki Region Ornithological Society, Tringa ry, at the tip of the Hanko peninsula. Established in 1979, the station's activities focus on monitoring bird migration, ringing, and research. The collected data has been compiled into the public Haahka migratory bird browser, which presents the occurrence of over 300 bird species in the area over several decades. The station is located in the Uddskatan nature reserve, where movement is strictly regulated. A nature trail open to everyone runs through the area, but visiting the actual bird observatory requires either participating in a guided tour or obtaining a separate permit. Guided tours are arranged for groups upon request, and individual visitors can book places on public guided tours. The station also serves as a training venue for bird enthusiasts, and its operations are maintained through membership fees, station fees, and donations.
