Gustavsvärn Lighthouse

Gustavsvärn is a rocky island off Hanko, about 3 km southwest of the town centre. On the island are the ruins of an 18th-century Swedish fortress and a red-and-white lighthouse built in 1865. The fortress was left unfinished and suffered damage during the Crimean War. Today the island is a popular excursion destination, reachable by water bus or by one's own boat. Gustavsvärn offers historical maritime and military heritage in magnificent archipelago scenery. One can go for a sauna at Gustavsvärn by, for example, taking part in the Lighthouse Society's volunteer work days or an excursion.
