OPEN SAUNA MAPThe Naval Academy sauna on Pikku Mustasaari in Suomenlinna. Built in 1904, the 65 m2 sauna can hold up to 180 bathers. Apart from the topmost level, the benches are concrete and you can sit on several levels. The steam is "thrown" by turning on a water tap. The space echoes strongly, so the noise is considerable when dozens of people are talking. The stove is an enormous single-heating drum. The logs are a metre long. The walls and ceiling are stained with soot, so apparently smoke sometimes comes inside during the heating phase. The steam is soft and moist. You can go swimming in the sea through the door at the end of the building. Public sessions are hardly held in the sauna anymore, but 1–2 times every two years a sauna concert is held, for which tickets can be bought through the lippu.fi service.
