The museum offers visitors a unique combination of South Karelian museum tradition and traditional food culture. A särä meal in a tranquil setting, along with a smoke sauna, create an authentic and experiential whole in the historical courtyard. Särä is genuine South Karelian food tradition dating back a thousand years. Särä has been made more widely in the South Karelia region as well. Only in Lemi has the tradition remained vital into the 21st century. The ingredients of särä are lamb and potatoes. The only seasoning used is salt. Särä is baked in a birch trough, called a särä, in a wood-fired baking oven for hours, even up to 8 hours. By slowly simmering, särä gains its uniquely delicious flavor.
