The vicar of the Mikkeli Cathedral Parish has decided to end all activities at the Pitkäjärvi sauna and supports demolishing the building, citing its poor condition and lack of need. According to the vicar, the sauna's health safety is questionable, and the parish has no use for the premises in its activities, which is why investments such as renewing the water connections would be economically nonsensical. Although activities at the sauna cease immediately by the vicar's decision, the final fate of the property will be decided later by the parish council. The sauna was last open in the summer of 2023. Previously, sauna operations were run on a voluntary basis from the 1980s onward, until 2020 all year round, with two women's and two men's shifts per week. The sauna had about 5,000 visits per year.
