Pauanne

Pauanne is a group of buildings in Kaustinen, south of the church village, on top of Puhkionkallio hill. It was originally built as a gathering and treatment place for folk healers. The buildings were designed and built by builder-artist Tapani Hietalahti. Construction began in 1983 using traditional methods. Natural stone and wood have been used in the main building, and its roof is a shingle roof. The area has also had a smithy, where competitions have been held, as well as a wooden kota-like overnight lodge. The place has offered accommodation and restaurant services to travelers, and has organized folk healers' activities and concerts. The buildings had fallen into disrepair, but they were sold in 2024 to Sami Mäkelä and Seppo Palomäki, who intend to restore them. Pauanne's sauna building was destroyed in a fire in 2010, when a powerful downburst and a severe thunderstorm wreaked havoc in Kaustinen. However, the smoke sauna has survived best of the sauna building.
