Ähtäri Zoo is Finland's oldest natural zoo, specialising in animal species of the northern hemisphere's coniferous forest zone. Around 50 different animal species live in the roughly 60-hectare area of natural forest, including bears, wolves, lynxes, wolverines, snow leopards and various deer and bird species. The animals live in large enclosures with varied terrain, and a walking route of about three kilometres has been built in the area for touring them. In connection with the zoo there is a Domestic Animal Farm, which presents a traditional Finnish farmhouse yard and domestic animals in the spirit of the early 1900s. Members of the Ähtäri reserve officer corps also built a working smoke sauna in the area in 2021, but it is not currently in use.
