Pihlajasaari is a traditional recreational island and former villa island, whose nature consists of rocks, groves and woodlands as well as rocky and sandy beaches. The island lies off Hernesaari, about a 10-minute boat trip away. There are boat connections to the island from Ruoholahti and Merisatama in Helsinki. The Aalto sauna is an electric sauna located on Eastern Pihlajasaari, designed and built by architecture students.
