The school was in operation from 1890 to 1973, at its best sharing knowledge and skills with almost 50 pupils. Initially, teaching was handled by so-called preacher-teachers, and after 1960 by primary school teachers. Today the building is used mainly as an exhibition space. The school houses Metsähallitus's nature cottage and an exhibition about the outer archipelago. The school's storehouse building also houses a museum. Haapasaari artifacts can be found dating from the late 1700s onward, with subjects ranging from Haapasaari homes to fishing and seal hunting. Sauna available for rent to both lodgers and boaters
