Hotel Arthur was established in 1907 as the headquarters of the Helsinki YMCA on Vuorikatu, according to the plans of architects Eliel Saarinen and Vilho Penttilä. From the beginning, the building combined accommodation and dining halls, and the hotel was then known as Hospiz. Over the decades, the number of rooms has grown through several expansions to over 200, and the hotel has been renovated for meeting and conference use. In 1993 it received its current name after Professor Arthur Hjelt. Many well-known guests have stayed at the hotel, such as Bill Clinton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as regular guest, writer Aino Kallas, to whom a namesake room, 543, has been dedicated.
