The Tampere infectious diseases hospital was built in Kaakinmaa in 1897 to treat and isolate patients with contagious diseases, such as measles and other easily transmissible illnesses. In 1909–1910 the area expanded significantly with an Art Nouveau brick building designed by architect Birger Federley. At the same time, a so-called kärysauna, or disinfection facility, was also built, where patients and their clothes were cleansed of disease-causing agents. In the 1950s the hospital was renovated under the direction of architect Bertel Strömmer. Actual hospital operations ended in 1959. Since the 1980s, part of the hospital area has stood empty and fallen into disrepair, but at the same time the area has hosted artists' workspaces and various community projects. The kärysauna is a protected building.
