WaveAlvari is the world's only swimming hall designed by Alvar Aalto, and it is located in Jyväskylä as part of the historically significant Seminaarinmäki campus complex. Originally completed in 1955, the building has been expanded in several stages over the decades: a children's pool was added in the 1960s, a 50-metre pool in the 1970s and a spa section in the early 1990s. The building was for the most part placed under protection in 1992, and its architecture combines the use of natural light typical of Aalto with a harmonious placement in the surrounding landscape. The swimming hall is not only an architectural attraction, but also an active and versatile water sports centre serving locals, students and travellers alike. In addition to traditional swimming facilities, the premises include a gym, an indoor sports hall and a café. The site has undergone extensive renovations, which have preserved its original appearance while modernising the facilities.
