Maakalla is a self-governing fishermen's skerry located off Kalajoki, about 18 kilometres from the coast. The island is known for its rugged nature and its historic fishing village, which consists of dozens of small fishermen's huts. The area's main sights include a wooden church built in 1780 and a skerry museum, which sheds light on the history of the Kallankarit islands and on traditional seal hunting and fishing. In summer, cruises to Maakalla are organised regularly, on the Bon Marin and Kiira vessels, among others, as well as on the traditional galeas Ansio. On the island it is possible to buy whitefish caught and smoked by local fishermen, weather permitting. The destination offers visitors a chance to get acquainted with a unique traditional landscape and with the archipelago's historic self-government, which is still based on old law from the era of Swedish rule.
